Why August 12, 2026 Is a Turning Point for Food Packaging

Beginning on 12 August 2026, food-contact packaging containing PFAS at concentrations equal to or above the limits established under PPWR may no longer be legally placed on the EU market.

According to Article 5(5) of Regulation (EU) 2025/40, packaging shall not contain PFAS at concentrations equal to or exceeding:

  • 25 ppb for any individual PFAS measured by targeted analysis;
  • 250 ppb for the sum of PFAS measured by targeted analysis;
  • 50 ppm for total organic fluorine, including polymeric PFAS.

For packaging converters, importers, and foodservice brands, compliance will involve more than simply replacing materials. Businesses may need to reassess supplier qualification systems, testing procedures, and procurement strategies.

The new restrictions are expected to have the greatest impact on packaging formats that traditionally depend on fluorinated coatings.

Grease-Resistant Paper Containers
